General Autism Resources
With so much information available today, it’s hard to know where to start. We know parents, educators, case managers, and our mentors are always looking for meaningful content. Below is a collection of resources and organizations that the Islands of Brilliance team has found to be particularly useful when looking for assistance and direction. It is by no means an exhaustive list. Please reach out if you believe there is something that we should include below.
Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin
The Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin's mission is to provide support to Wisconsin families and individuals with Down syndrome and related disabilities through awareness, education, information, programs, services, and the exchange of ideas and experiences.
IOB is pleased to share that it is part of the newly-formed Think Ability Wisconsin (TAW) initiative aimed at increasing community-integrated employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD). Under the leadership of the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin, all partners in the initiative will work to provide education and training for PWIDD, while seeking to initiate long-term change by focusing on improving societal expectations, forming coalitions, and implementing public service campaigns to raise expectations and reduce barriers to employment for PWIDD.
Independence First
Inclusion. Access. Empowerment. Independence.
Independence First provides programming – from art classes or cooking classes, peer support, and even adaptive video gaming. See their schedule of upcoming events. Services include benefits counseling and Personal Care Support. They advocate for change and inclusivity and help people who want to stay or move into an independent living situation in their own home instead of institutions.
Understood.org
