APRIL IS AUTISM ACTION MONTH!
Once the calendar turns to April 1, there is a little extra energy within the autism community. April, once called “Autism Awareness Month,” has commonly been renamed “Autism Acceptance Month.” However, at Islands of Brilliance (IOB), we like to do things a little differently. We call April, Autism Action Month.
What's so different about the word, action? A lot.
As a community, we have the power to take action. To drive awareness of the challenges autistic individuals face. To celebrate their differences. To educate others. And to advocate on their behalf.

Autism Action Month Events
We have planned several events to bring together our IOB community at some of our student’s favorite Milwaukee places — places that speak to our students’ SpIns (special interests).
Let’s create some excitement! Wear something ORANGE (IOB's trademark color). As we are walking through the exhibits together, we hope we can promote autism awareness and foster community understanding and acceptance of autistic individuals. We want to be noticed and have people asking, “who is that fun group in orange?”

Discovery World
Saturday, April 8, 1:00–4:00 pm
All aboard! Explore the place where IOB began! From trains to fish to ships…join us as we turn Discovery World orange for the day!

Milwaukee Public Museum
Saturday, April 15, 1:00–4:00 pm
Walk the Streets of Old Milwaukee, hang with the butterflies, explore the Rainforest, and encounter dinosaurs as we fill the museum with Orange!

Milwaukee County Zoo
Sunday, April 16, 1:00–4:00 pm
Lions and Tigers and Bears…oh my! Join your friends – human and furry – as we explore the wild side of one of our favorite Milwaukee locations. The tigers are already wearing orange, will you join us?
