What is Homeroom?

An online opportunity for autistic students ages 8+. Using elements from our Sandbox programming, students will explore a variety of activities that work alongside traditional curriculums to help build character, resilience, and creativity.

  • Online

Because that makes it easy for busy families - wherever you are, homeroom is a click away. Concerned that virtual isn’t right for your student? IOB’s online workshops are specifically designed for autistic students.

  • Structured

Our education experts guide the discussion and activities. A consistent daily schedule provides familiarity and routine.

  • Creative

From answering the “Question of the Day” to completing creative challenges using just what can be found around the house (no special supplies needed!), students have the chance to express their creativity!

  • Interactive

Peer time is precious, especially for homeschooled students and doubly so for students on the autism spectrum. We work on relationship skills like turn-taking and positive feedback so that our students not only feel included but connected.

Program Description

Homeroom uses the joys of creativity to help students express themselves while building flexibility and mobility. It combines the creative aspects of Sandbox’s Doodle Lounge with some of the structure and routine of a regular classroom. Each session will start with a Question of the Day (beloved by past IOB students!) followed by a Joke of the Day (humor makes everything more fun!), and then an activity.

Our activities promote creativity! Students might be challenged to build something using supplies easily found around their house or classroom. Or, they might be asked to draw something that smashes two ideas together (like the cupcake house above). Some activities span multiple days so there is no pressure to get things done!

Some past examples of activities include:

  • Create a gratitude soup “recipe” (collage) with old magazine clippings

  • Create a portal to your “happy place” using recyclables/ things around the house

  • Build a friendly neighborhood out of cardboard/recyclables

Ultimately, Homeroom builds community and is great for students who could use more practice with social structure.

Partner Programs

Partner with IOB to provide these great benefits to your students! IOB partners with school systems to offer homeroom as part of their curriculum for students on the autism spectrum.  Contact Margaret Fairbanks, Chief Education Officer, for more information.
