While everyone is familiar with R2-D2, droids can come in all shapes, sizes, colors and personalities. IOB welcomes Brilliant Guest Artist Steve Radtke and his full-size R2-D2 to host a two hour workshop during which students will bring to life their own custom, pint-size astromech droid! Using soft materials (droids will not be functional) including cardboard tubes, plastic domes, laser cut parts, craft supplies, foam and paint, students will be given the opportunity to create a truly unique character complete with a Star Wars-style name. Students will assemble their droid using a hot glue gun, choose an appropriate color scheme, add details, and finish the workshop by introducing their droid by name and origin story. It’s sure to be another great opportunity for our student’s creativity and imagination to shine!

What is the age range?
The workshop is recommended for students ages 10 – 18+, who will be comfortable working independently with some support.

What is the cost?
Cost of the workshop is $75. Waiver/Family Services/IRIS can be used for this workshop — authorization must be received from your case manager prior.

Students in this workshop are expected to:
1. Be able to work independent of direct Special Education support
2. Be attentive and participate in a 5 minute process presentation led by our guest artist
3. Be able to work independently at a table and attend to a task for a minimum of 30 minutes, and then return to work after a short break (if needed)
4. Show the focus, creativity and diligence to glue together various pieces into a new droid
5. Show an interest in independently building, fabricating, writing and creating artwork outside of school programming

Role needed: Droid Buddy

As a Droid Buddy, you will help our students bring to life their own custom, pint-size astromech droid! Using soft materials (droids will not be functional) including cardboard tubes, plastic domes, laser cut parts, craft supplies, foam and paint, students will be given the opportunity to create a truly unique character complete with a Star Wars-style name. Students will assemble their droid at their own station using a hot glue gun, choose an appropriate color scheme, add details, and finish the workshop by introducing their droid by name and origin story.

We need four Droid Buddies per workshop. Some students will be able to work independently, while others will need some assistance. As a Droid Buddy you’ll roam the workshop offering assistance where needed. No Photoshop or Illustrator skills required! It’s sure to be another great opportunity for our student’s creativity and imagination to shine!
